- A note to the parents of the new novice wrestler.
As a parent watching and participating in the LH Novice wrestling program for a few years now, it seems like the same questions always come up from parents either considering or brand new to the novice wrestling program.
- How safe is wrestling? Not as safe as PlayStation, but it's alot better for him. The incidents
of injuries to children during wrestling are rare, and the physical activity of wrestling promotes better strength, stamina, balance, and coordination that may ultimately prevent injuries from occurring to your child during other activities.
- What equipment does my child need to participate? No special equipment is required at
the wrestling sessions. Clean socks, shorts, and t-shirt are all your child needs to practice in, but some children find that wrestling shoes help them gain more solid footing on the wrestling mats. Headgear which covers the ears is also equipment that some kids and parents choose to use, but not required.
- How are the practices structured? The coaches usually start practice with light activity and
stretching, followed by repetition drills on basic wrestling moves. Actual live wrestling is fairly limited during the beginning of the season but becomes a larger part of practice as the wrestlers skill levels increase. One of the coaches primary functions is to try to pair kids of the same general age, size, and ability during drilling and live wrestling, and they do a good job of this in the Little Hornets practice room. Several Jr/Sr High School Wrestling Team members also attend practice and give additional instruction on proper technique. Practice usually concludes with some fun games that relate to an aspect of wrestling. Little Hornets practices are fun for the kids.
- My daughter is interested. Can she participate? Yes. There have been several girls take
advantage of the club, and one of them even went on to wrestle for the Junior High School team. Because the number of girls is generally low, your daughter should expect to either wrestle with boys or recruit a girlfriend to join with her as a practice partner.
- Is there competitions outside the club? Yes. There are local novice wrestling tournaments
almost every weekend fall thru spring. The cost to enter a these tournaments is low, and gives your child a great place have fun competing and using the skills he has developed. Licking Heights also hosts an open wrestling tournament at the end of the season where the kids are encouraged to participate. A link to these tournaments is provided on the Youth Wrestling Homepage.
